Why a breaking wave is hard to fake, and easy to film
A breaking wave is the most cinematic thing the sea does, and the hardest thing to suggest in a still photo. The shape changes in a fraction of a second: the lip curls, the face turns white, the foam runs up the sand. A clip gives that shape time, so the wave can rise slowly and the spray can hang in the air for as long as the frame needs.
The photo gives the model the coastline. A low shot near the waterline shows the wave rising above the person; a higher shot shows the whole break and the beach behind it. Keep the sea and the sky in frame, and keep the person clear of the water line, so the wave is a backdrop and not a hazard. Wave clips depend on the water in the photo. Before you render, check:
- A level horizon with the sea behind the subject. A tilted horizon makes every wave lean.
- Foam heading toward the lens is easier to animate than foam running sideways across the frame.
- Calm, shallow water around the feet. A deep, churning sea in the photo becomes a storm.
- Only adults who agreed, standing well clear of the break, and nobody else in the surf.
- One wave and one body movement. The sea supplies the rest of the motion.

Can I use a surf photo with a real wave in it?
Yes, if you took it or have the rights to it and everyone in it is an adult who agreed. A clear shot with the wave still forming gives the most natural motion.
Why does the wave look too fast?
The prompt probably asks for too much at once. Use one wave, one movement and a slow camera, and keep the clip to five or ten seconds.
Can the camera follow the sea?
Yes. A slow push-in or an overhead drone rising both work well. Fast tracking shots make the foam blur.
Does the clip have sound?
